DIY Filmmaking: Planks of Wood ($5)

For a recent project I was working on, I needed to have planks of wood barricading windows and doors. Because nailing planks of wood across a window would be lots of work (and pretty dangerous...), I decided I had to create some props.

For this project you will need:
  • Styrofoam Sheets (I used an 1/2" x 12" x 36") - $4.99
  • Brown Acrylic Pant (Under $1)
  • Flat Paintbrush
  • Cup of water

To begin, make a few random streaks across your board with your paint using the flat paintbrush. You want to make sure that the streaks go only one direction (Left to Right or Up and Down). Most often, you will want to the streaks to run the length of the boards.
Then begin to add water to the mix to thin out and blend the paint. This is done by dipping your brush into water. From there, it's just a matter of blending.

I found to create a more realistic look, make some darker oval shapes in the wood to act as "knots."

Finally, use a sharpie to create "nails" at both ends of the board. This is, of course, an optional step.

Overall, I was really happy with my end result. They we're super lightweight and easy stuck to the wall using just scotch tape.
